Jacksonville — Duval County Tax Collector Jim Overton says the Gateway Branch on West 44th Street will continue to be the only location where drivers can take road tests to get their licenses.
On Twitter, Overton says the new omicron variant of COVID-19 is the reason his office is postponing the expansion to other branches.
Walk-in customers can take the tests Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. That does not include holidays.
The tests are being administered remotely, which means the examiner will not be inside the vehicle with the person taking the test. But the customer has to bring a licensed drive who is at least 21 years old to sit in the vehicle with them during the test.
The office will supply a hands-free device so the examiner can communicate with the person taking the test. You have to provide proof insurance and registration on the vehicle being used.
Walk-ins will be served between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. M-F, excluding holidays. Customers will need to bring a licensed driver age 21 or older to sit in the seat next to them during the exam and provide proof of insurance and registration on the vehicle they will be using.
