Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp open essay contest to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Martin Luther King Jr. Day marked the start of an essay contest from the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp where the team is asking students to reflect on King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.

The winner will get Jumbo Shrimp prizes and free tickets for the entire class to go to a home game at 121 Financial Ballpark.

“This contest provides a wonderful platform to encourage young writers to reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to share their impressive writing with our community,” says Harold Craw, executive vice president and general manager of the Jumbo Shrimp. “The judges and I look forward to reading this year’s submissions.”

The essay contest is open to all K-12 students in Duval, Clay and St. Johns counties with contestants broken down into three categories (K-5, 6-8, 9-12).

Entries need to be submitted by Feb. 18 to the email address win@jaxshrimp.com. Students need to include their name, age, grade and school. Winners will be announced Feb. 25.

The contest is part of the team’s Black History Month celebration efforts.
