Jacksonville, FL — Both directions of JTB are closed between Hodges and Kernan following a deadly police-involved shooting. No officers were hurt in the encounter that happened before 5 am.
Chief T.K. Waters said an officer was dispatched to a traffic crash on JTB at Hodges around 3:13 am. The officer was talking to the man behind the wheel, who was described as a white man in his late 50’s.
At some point in the conversation, the driver started to attack the officer, and said that he had a gun. Chief Waters said the officer was able to deploy his taser, which did subdue the suspect for a short period.
But the man then started to run toward his vehicle, still yelling that he had a gun, at which point the officer fired two times, killing the man.
“These investigations are very long, very tedious, very detailed”, said Chief Waters.
Officer B. Ondriezek has been with JSO for one year, and this is his first officer involved shooting. As of 7 am, detectives had not searched the vehicle, so police couldn’t confirm if there was a gun in the vehicle.
