Candlelit vigil held by family in memory of 4-year-old who police say was murdered

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — On Sunday night, a candlelit vigil was held in memory of 4-year-old James Reese Jr.

“I’m hoping to get justice for him,” Christopher Nastasi said.

Nastasi is the child’s uncle, who drove 15 hours from Texas for the vigil. Nastasi provided photos of the young boy who tragically died after being taken to the hospital just over a week ago.

Action News Jax first reported Friday that Reese Jr.’s death is being investigated as a murder. Nastasi confirmed with Action News Jax that the 4-year-old was brought to Wolfson Children’s Hospital on life support, later dying on April 21.

A heavily redacted police report Action News Jax obtained indicated JSO spoke with a Department of Children Families Investigator at the hospital and that a detective will follow up.

“I’m just torn apart by it,” Nastasi said. “I can’t even describe how I’m feeling... It’s that terrible.”

One by one, the family members lit candles and lanterns for Reese Jr., wearing shirts with his name and face on them in his memory.

Nastasi said they have been hurting in a way like never before.

“The usual. No sleep. Nightmares, anxiety, frustration, anger and all the symptoms of losing someone close to you that you love dearly,” he said.

Reese Jr. is described as a joyful kid who could light up a room with his smile.

The 4-year-old’s great uncle, Mark McKenna, provided a heartfelt goodbye.

“All I have to say to him is good night, Jr. We love you,” McKenna said tearfully.

Action News Jax asked JSO if there are any suspects and who will be held responsible for the 4-year-old’s death but they haven’t been able to provide that information yet.

While it’s been a heartbreaking time, a GoFundMe page has been created by the family to help with the funeral.
