Jacksonville activists demonstrate in the wake of Chauvin guilty verdict

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Dozens of people gathered for a peaceful demonstration in front of the Duval County courthouse on Wednesday.

They gathered to celebrate the conviction of Derek Chauvin, who was found guilty Tuesday of murder and manslaughter charges in the killing of George Floyd.

“And if we keep fighting, and if we keep accessing the power of the people, we are going to get justice and accountability!” said activist, Monique Sampson.

The demonstration was organized by the Jacksonville Community Action Committee (JCAC).

“Today, people came out after the George Floyd hearing and after the verdict came in as guilty. We’re happy to see that, but we’re hoping it sets a precedent here in Jacksonville,” said JCAC organizer, Christina Kittle.

The Northside Coalition took part in the event as well.

Leader of the Northside Coalition, Ben Frazier, explained why he feels today’s demonstration was necessary.

“We want to make clear that it’s necessary for us to put the mirror up in front of the face of Jacksonville, Florida. We think it’s great what happened out in Minneapolis. But we need to talk about JSO and what’s happening right here in Jacksonville,” said Kittle.

Activists are calling for a police accountability council with subpoena power.

“The only institution that ever has any evidence is the JSO. So, they’ll be investigating themselves. We’re looking for more external investigations, not just this cycle of internal investigations,” said Kittle.
