EPA clears Durkeeville Superfund site after cleanup project in Jacksonville

The head of the United States Environmental Protection Agency stopped in Jacksonville today to tour the Fairfax Street Wood Treaters Superfund site in Durkeeville.

He gave a cleanup project the all clear, which means the site has been removed from the national priority list. EPA Administrator Andrew Wheeler says the project finished about two and a half years early, and no more work is needed to protect human health and the environment.

“Over the last couple of years we have reprioritized funding to get the sites cleaned up where people live and children are playing,” Wheeler says.

We’ve been following the project over the years where 60,000 tons of contaminated soil and sediment have been removed. The project focused on the 12.5-acre Wood Treater property and 51 nearby homes. The priority Wheeler mentioned is because the site is close to two elementary schools, RV Daniels and Susie Tolbert.

Today’s tour of the property involved elected officials at the federal, state and local level, including Jacksonville City Council Member Garrett Dennis. He says a committee is being formed to discuss the future of the site.
