Fallen Nassau County Deputy honored with road naming

A permanent memorial to a fallen hero.

The family of Nassau County Deputy Eric Oliver was on hand today to help cut the ribbon on a stretch of road that’s been dedicated in Oliver’s honor- Eric Oliver Way.

Oliver died last November, after being hit by a car while he was chasing a suspect on foot across State Road 200. That suspect was eventually tracked down in Jacksonville and pleaded guilty to being in the country illegally. Francisco Portillo-Fuentes is currently serving a two year federal sentence in connection to his plea.

Earlier this year, Oliver's name was added to a national memorial to fallen officers in DC. The community is also still looking to put up a statue to honor Oliver near the site of the fatal collision.
