Federal Passenger Ferry Grant awarded to JTA

Jacksonville, FL — A $3,356,900 federal grant has been awarded to the Jacksonville Transportation Authority to make improvements to the St. Johns River Ferry.

“It’s going be used to make improvements not only to the Ferry vessel itself, but also to the infrastructure around the Ferry terminal,” explains JTA spokesperson Leigh Ann Rassler.

Rassler says the funding will go in part toward Phase Four of the Ferry improvement project, which deals with boosting the operational safety of the vessel and improving long-term maintenance on the slip walls, which act as buffers between the Ferry and land, when it’s docked.

Phase Three of St. Johns River Ferry construction is due to be completed in January 2019, and includes removal and replacement of existing terminal bridges and installation of stopping mechanisms.

Rassler says an upcoming overhaul and maintenance project will take place this fall, requiring the Ferry vessel to be out of service beginning September 4th. She says the vessel should be back in service by October 31st.

She says 468,000 people used the Ferry between May 2017 and April 2018.
