Florida’s COVID numbers continue to drop

JACKSONVILLE, Fla — In its weekly report, the Florida Department of Health says the state had 19,519 new positive COVD cases, a drop of nearly 6,200 compared to last week’s report. This marks the seventh straight week Florida’s case numbers have dropped.

While the state numbers have been on the decline for 7 weeks, it’s been much longer for Duval County. The county reported 710 new cases, a drop for the eleventh week in a row. Duval’s case numbers are the seventh highest in the state behind Dade, Broward, Hillsborough, Palm Beach, Orange, and Pinellas. In the other four Northeastern counties, St. Johns County had 294 new cases, followed by Clay County with 166. Nassau and Baker County were in the double digits with Nassau having 66 cases and Baker with 21.

The report also says 243,220 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered for the week, a decline for the second week in a row. 72% of the state have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. In terms of vaccine percentage, Northeast Florida remained idle. Baker and Nassau County stayed at 44% for the fourth week in a row, while Clay (56%), Duval (63%) and St. Johns (74%) remained at their percentage for the second straight week.
