Gov. Ron DeSantis activates National Guard in response to migrants in Florida Keys

Jacksonville FL — On Friday, Governor Ron DeSantis signed an executive order activating the National Guard in response to the mostly Cuban migrants who have landed in the Florida Keys. The state will help local law enforcement agencies by deploying air assets, and marine patrols to support water interdictions and to make sure migrants attempting to get to Florida are safe.

The governor is blaming the Biden administration for the lack of help from the Federal government.

“As the negative impacts of Biden’s lawless immigration policies continue unabated, the burden of the Biden administration’s failure falls on local law enforcement who lack the resources to deal with the crisis”. Governor DeSantis says.

On Thursday, President Biden said his administration was cracking down on migrants coming in from Cuba, Haiti, and Nicaragua saying it would immediately start turning people away from those countries who cross the US-Mexico border, but it’s unclear what that means for migrants who arrive in Florida.

The governor’s office says since August last year, federal, state, and local law enforcement has encountered more than 8,000 migrants in waters off the coast of Florida.

Since the New Year’s weekend, more than 700 migrants have arrived in the Keys.
