St. Johns River Ferry out of service pending repairs

Jacksonville, FL — The St. Johns River Ferry is out of service until further notice.

We first reported this morning that the Ferry was taken out of service “as a precaution”, according to JTA. JTA says they’ve now determined that repairs are needed to the propeller.

They first suspected a problem early today, when an unusual noise was heard while the Ferry was docking at the Fort George slip. Everyone got off the Ferry safely, and it was brought back to the Mayport slip without customers on board, so the noise could be investigated. JTA says divers were sent down to inspect the vessel, and they found a submerged rope was entangled in the propeller system.

That caused damage that will require lifting the Ferry out of the water to repair. Before it can get back in to service, JTA says both they and the US Coast Guard will need to inspect the repairs. JTA says they will work to get this done as quickly as possible, but there is no timeline being provided at this point.
