JSO: Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting on Jacksonville’s Westside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is investigating after an officer-involved shooting left a suspect dead on the city’s Westside.

At 6:44 p.m. Tuesday, police said they got a call about a robbery outside a business on Normandy Boulevard off Lane Avenue South.

When officers arrived, they saw the robbery victim pointing at the suspect, who police later identified as 26-year-old Darian Bryant. Police say he took off running to the Westwood Apartments.

When officers found Bryant, police say a struggle started. According to JSO, Bryant pulled out a gun and fired at officers. That’s when police returned fire -- killing him.

Neighbors told Action News Jax they weren’t allowed inside the apartment complex as officers searched for the suspect.

JSO searched the complex for about 45 minutes. Police said a witness called and believed the suspect was inside one of the apartment units.

Police made about 10 calls for the suspect to come out.

He did eventually and had his arms raised according to police, but as he approached officers, he decided to run off again.

JSO said he attempted to hop a fence, so an officer tried to cut him off with a patrol car.

Officers said the suspect fell onto the hood of the patrol car and a struggle ensued.

Shortly after, neighbors reported hearing several gunshots.

“I saw a whole bunch of police cars speeding in, and then we heard a series of gunshots,” one neighbor said. She wished to remain anonymous. “Shortly after, we saw a bunch of fire trucks and ambulances.”

According to JSO, the suspect fired a gun once and officers fired back, killing him.

The neighbor was allowed back in afterward. She told Action News Jax that there were more than a dozen police cars and several officers investigating the scene right in front of her building.

“It’s complete chaos. There are about maybe 15 police officers and a lot of lights. Everyone is standing outside. Everything is roped off,” the neighbor said.

Neighbors reported the shooting happened in the parking lot in front of apartment building 16.

No officers were hurt in the incident.

The two officers involved in the shooting are now on administrative leave.

JSO briefed reporters after midnight:
