Jacksonville, FL — Designed to invest not just in Edward Waters College, but the surrounding community, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry is pledging $8.4 million dollars to two major campus projects.
The funding will be included in the City budget proposal Curry presents July 17th, and is subject to City Council approval.
EWC President Nat Glover approached Curry earlier this year to ask for support for improving the EWC dorms and for building an on-campus athletic field. Curry says these investments are not just for the campus, but the community overall.
Glover says an on-campus athletic field will bring a new atmosphere, especially around sports that are currently being played at local high schools. The field will also be accessible for the community, which City leaders hope will boost health and safety interests in that part of town.
For the dorms, Glover says they’re moldy and unhealthy, which inhibit EWC’s ability to recruit and retain students.
Curry is proposing $4 million for the development of the community field and $4.4 million for the dorms.
