Jacksonville, FL — He’s served his country for ten years, and now Military Working Dog Rex will spend the rest of his time enjoying the civilian dog life.
Rex was honored at Naval Station Mayport today, as he retired from service. He and his handler, Military Police Officer Millie Canipe, received a shadow box highlighting Rex’ accomplishments while on the job.
Rex logged more than 4,000 hours in explosive detection work, from the annual air show to base visits by the President, Vice President, Navy Secretary, and others. He also performed demonstrations for local high schools, according to Mayport.
Canipe says Rex is still capable of performing the job, but it’s the right time for him to step aside and enjoy life.
“He’s got a plush carpet to lay on, he’s got 4.85 acres to run around on, old country dirt roads to walk up and down. So, life is good for him now,” she says.
Rex, a Naval Station Mayport Military Working Dog will retire this morning during a ceremony that will honor his faithful service to our country. Here’s a cake that was made for him to enjoy after the ceremony 😊 @ActionNewsJax @WOKVNews pic.twitter.com/wZJFN9Udjq
