More than a dozen St. Johns County boats burglarized, Miami man arrested

A Miami man has been arrested in connection to two separate incidents involving boat burglaries in St. Johns County.

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office says, earlier this month, one or more suspects cut through the perimeter fence of a boat and RV storage facility in the northwest portion of the county. They received 13 reports of boat burglaries from this incident, mainly targeting navigation and marine electronics. SJSO says they also have an unsolved similar case from May.

In both, there is a vehicle with a similar description seen in the area. SJSO says surveillance caught the tag on the most recent case, and it came back as registered in Miami-Dade in South Florida.

SJSO says they found stolen items being sold online, and while the seller initially claimed he didn’t know about the theft, he has since admitted his involvement. That suspect has been identified as 45-year-old Mizael Alfonso, of Miami.

In all, SJSO says the value of the items stolen from both incidents totals around $63,000. Alfonso has been booked in South Florida on charges relating to both incidents, and he will eventually be transferred to St. Johns County.
