Former president for youth football program in Fernandina Beach accused of stealing more than $16K in club funds

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. — Police in Fernandina Beach said thousands of dollars that should’ve gone to a youth football program went to the former president’s wallet instead for his own personal use.

Christopher “CJ” Crosby, the former president of the Fernandina Beach Football Association, was arrested Tuesday and charged with theft.

The Fernandina Beach Police Department stated Crosby stole more than $16,000 from the youth football program from December 2019 to February 2021.

Police were contacted by the league’s board members on Feb. 25 after noticing suspicious activity on the ATM debit card associated with the account.

The former treasurer for the youth football program told investigators she was alerted by the bank on Feb. 19 that Crosby tried to remove her from the account.

The report indicates she then froze the account and met with the association board members to review the bank statements.

The board stated it determined Crosby made 31 unauthorized ATM withdrawals totaling $16,630. The report doesn’t mention what he may have purchased with the club funds.

The new president said there was no football season due to COVID-19, so there should have been no charges to the account, according to the report.

The new president declined to comment to Action News Jax because it’s an ongoing investigation.

When questioned by investigators, the report indicates Crosby said, “He knew why he was at the police station.”

Action News Jax learned Crosby has been an employee with the City of Fernandina Beach since April 2017. The city manager said Crosby’s position is “Streets Department Maintenance Tech” and that he’ll likely be terminated.

The city manager sent Action News Jax a statement that read:

“City staff, up to and including myself, has a high standard for conduct. We are all entrusted by our residents and businesses to serve our community with integrity and professionalism. Upholding that standard is critical to continue to serve our community and other civic organizations.”
