Proposed City of St. Augustine Beach ordinance aims to prevent dune removal

Jacksonville, FL — Now, an ordinance has been proposed aimed at preventing similar activities in the future.

The proposal reads in part, "The city shall not permit nor recommend development that modifies undisturbed areas of the coastal dune system in the city of St. Augustine Beach”

City Commissioner and former Mayor Undine George, tells Action News Jax, this would be the second action taken by the city against this kind of permitting since the dunes were altered by the property owner. The city amended its comprehensive plan earlier this month.

“The ordinances implement those goals and policy standards,” said George. “So, that’s why it’s critical that we have it in both.”

George says the new language gives the city the power to say no to outside agencies.

“When the DEP asks the city if that development work will contradict any ordinances or comprehensive plan in our city, the city can affirmatively say, ‘absolutely it will,’” said George.

Neighbor Dave Bradfield feels a precedent may have already been set but hopes the new ordinance, if passed, accomplishes its objective.

“If the ordinance is enforced in a manner that protects the beach and the dunes, that would be great,” said Bradfield.

Action News Jax reached out to the homeowners on 12th Lane, asking if they wished to comment on the proposed ordinance. They had no comment.
