A new scam alert that could affect your wallet.
The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office is warning about someone posing as a debt collector, who appears to be calling from the JSO non-emergency line, but is really just a con.
JSO says they’ve identified a pattern of people reporting calls where the caller ID number shows up as 904-630-0500, the non-emergency line. The person on the phone claims to be a debt collector and threatens to arrest you if you don’t pay up. Often, the victim doesn’t even have debt, but the suspect claims the debt was simply unknown to the victim.
The Sheriff’s Office says it does not ever act as a debt collector, and if you are contacted by this number you should not hand over your personal information, but rather call the Economic Crimes Unit through the non-emergency phone number.
Police further warn that these “phone number spoofing” scams are becoming more prevalent, and that you should not always trust the caller ID.
If you have any information about the scam or anyone involved you're asked to contact JSO at 904-630-0500 or JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org. You can also submit an anonymous tip and be eligible for a $3,000 reward by calling in a tip to Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.
