Suspect arrested in January shooting that claimed life of 65-year-old Jacksonville man

Jacksonville, FL — Months after a 65-year-old man was killed on the Westside, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has announced an arrest.

Donovan Smith, 27, is now charged with murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, after what police say started as an altercation outside a convenience store on Edgewood Avenue North on January 6, 2018.

JSO says Smith was inside the store at the time, when Willie Dornes was fighting with one of his associates. JSO says when Smith became aware of the fight, he chased Dornes and shot him several times and then fled the scene.

Smith was arrested by US Marshals on Friday.

Police say there was some sort of a relationship between Smith and Dornes, but it's not exactly clear what that was.

Several co-defendants are said to be facing other charges, but not murder.
