Suspect identified in JSO officer-involved shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has identified the suspect involved in Tuesday’s officer-involved shooting in the Arlington area.

The suspect, 29-year-old Abel Navarro, has not been booked into the jail at this time as he is in the hospital.

JSO says Navarro was wanted out of Jacksonville for kidnapping and armed robbery. When they arrived, Chief T.K. Waters said officers asked the man to come out six different times.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said officers were serving the warrant at the 6700 block of Morgana Road when shots were fired. The suspect fired several rounds at officers, who Waters said did not fire back, but took cover behind their cars. They asked four more times for him to come out, which is when they learned he had a hostage inside.

Police said the woman did safely get out.

Police said the suspect eventually leaned out a side window and officers fired multiple times. He was taken to the hospital in critical, but stable condition.

No officers were hurt in the shooting.

Navarro has been charged with armed robbery, kidnapping with a firearm, false imprisonment, and attempted murder on a law enforcement officer.

He is not eligible for bond at this time.
