Trial set to begin for man accused of shooting JSO detective

Jacksonville, FL — A young man accused of shooting a Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office detective is set to begin trial today.  19-year-old Kevin Rojas was arrested following the March 2016 shooting on the westside.

Police say the narcotic detective was taking his son to school when he saw an individual driving erratically on Collins Road.  The detective pulled the vehicle over, and investigators say the driver started shooting as soon as he got out of the car.

Rojas has pleaded not guilty to the seven charges, including attempted murder.

The detective survived the shooting, and his teen son was not hurt in the exchange of gunfire.

JSO believes Rojas may have been attempting suicide-by-cop following a fight with his girlfriend.
