Witness: Man pointed sawed-off shotgun during St. Augustine road rage incident

Jacksonville, FL — A St. Augustine man is accused of threatening a woman and her granddaughter with a shotgun during a reported road rage encounter.

30-year-old Rontress Caldwell was arrested on Sunday evening at the Walmart on U.S. 1 in St. Augustine south near Flagler Hospital.  According to an offense report, a woman was driving on SR 312 approaching Old Moultrie Road when a car pulled in front of them and stopped. The woman and her granddaughter reported a man exited the car and pointed a ‘sawed-off shotgun’ at their vehicle, and then jumped back in to his car.

The woman and her granddaughter drove to a nearby Walmart, where they saw the man’s car in the parking lot.  Fearing for their lives and the safety of others they called police, according to the report.

A St. Johns County Sheriff’s Deputy stopped Caldwell, and he reported that his vehicle was run off the road by the woman’s vehicle, which made him angry.  Caldwell told the deputy that he pulled up next to the other vehicle and showed her a gun. He claimed to have never left his vehicle and never pointed a firearm.

A search of Caldwell’s vehicle revealed a sawed-off shotgun underneath the front passenger seat, as well as two shotgun shells in a cup holder.  Caldwell was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, as well as a felony charge of weapon possession.

He was released from jail on bond, according to St. Johns County jail records.
