Man shot 11 times in "suicide by cop"

The man killed by police on the southside late yesterday was hit at least 11 times.

Jacksonville Police confirm today Todd Jones is dead, no officers are injured. Investigators say it started as a dispute between a father and his stepson. The suspect ambushed his stepfather Elbert Lee Lilley and stabbed him as he returned to their trailer, and then holed up inside, telling the cops he was armed and was not coming out.

Chief Tom Hackney with JSO says they mobilized a SWAT team to diffuse the sitaution but before they could arrive, the suspect approached officers with a gun and they were forced to shoot him with their department-issued AR-15 rifles.

"This is somebody who, it was an apparent suicide by cop," said Hackney.

Three officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, as is protocol for these situations.

The shooting happened at the Countryside Village Mobile Home Park on Beach Boulevard Tuesday night. According to our news Partner Action News "Tueday's shooting was the 4th police shooting of 2013. In 2012 there were 10 people shot by police, 6 of those shootings were deadly. In 2011, there were seven police shootings."

JSO says the suspect's stepfather was taken to Shands Jacksonville and at last check he was in stable condition. Police say they hope to have more information Wednesday morning.
