Coronavirus outbreak: 3rd US case confirmed in California, health officials say

SANTA ANA, Calif. — Health officials have confirmed a third case of novel coronavirus in the United States, multiple news outlets are reporting.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced late Saturday that a traveler from Wuhan, China, in California tested positive for the respiratory illness, the Orange County Health Care Agency said in a news release. Officials "provided guidance" to the patient "to reduce exposure to the public while awaiting confirmation from the CDC," according to the release.

"The individual has now been transported to a local hospital and is in isolation in good condition," the release said.

Two other U.S. cases – one in Washington state and another in Illinois – were reported last week, authorities said.

According to CNBC, at least 56 people, mostly in China, have died from the illness. At least 1,975 cases have been confirmed worldwide, the outlet reported.
