Ramp to Main Street bridge shuts down Thursday in Jacksonville amid demolition project

The project to demolish the ramp from Independent Drive to the Main Street bridge in downtown Jacksonville is getting underway, and starting Thursday the ramp will be closed to vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Florida Department of Transportation says pedestrians and bicyclists will have to use the sidewalk on the east side of the bridge for now. Eventually, there will be a new ramp built by the City of Jacksonville for bicyclists and pedestrians.

For now, the FDOT says anyone walking or biking over the bridge from the area where the Jacksonville Landing used to be will be detoured to Bay Street and then Newnan Street to eventually get on the bridge on the Independent Drive ramp on the east side of the bridge. On the Southbank, you’ll have to get on the east sidewalk from Riverplace Boulevard.

The Independent Drive ramp to the bridge will be permanently closed to motorists.
