The Americans argued that they should have received their silver medals as the Games came to a close, but the CAS panel ruled that no medals would be awarded for the team competition until an investigation concludes into whether Valieva will be disqualified for having a banned substance show up in a drug test in December.

“It’s extremely disheartening to leave the Games empty-handed,” ice dancer Evan Bates said.

The news of the banned substance in Valieva’s test was not reported until after the Olympic Games began.

Valieva, 15, was the first woman to land a quadruple jump at the Olympics.

Trimetazidine, a banned substance according to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), was found in Valieva’s December 2021 drug testing sample.

The Russian team, with Valieva as a member, was first in the competition. The U.S. was second.

The investigation into the doping charges can take anywhere from months to years to complete. If Valieva is disqualified, the nine Americans will move up to first place and get gold medals.
