House Speaker Nancy Pelosi can no longer receive Communion in the Catholic Church because of her support for abortion rights, San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone announced Friday.
Cordileone said in the announcement that he had warned Pelosi in April that she had to discontinue her support of abortion rights or stop referring to her faith to justify that support, according to The San Francisco Chronicle.
Cordileone added that Pelosi had declined to meet with him or talk to him by phone about the issue.
“As you have not publicly repudiated your position on abortion, and continue to refer to your Catholic faith in justifying your position and to receive Holy Communion, that time has now come,” the archbishop wrote. “I am hereby notifying you that you are not to present yourself for Holy Communion and, should you do so, you are not to be admitted to Holy Communion.”
Cordileone said in he sent Pelosi a letter April 7 expressing his concerns after she vowed to codify the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision establishing a constitutional right to abortion into law because of the Texas law banning most abortions that will take effect if the high court overturns Roe.
Cordileone also said Pelosi never responded.
“After numerous attempts to speak with Speaker Pelosi to help her understand the grave evil she is perpetrating, the scandal she is causing” and “the danger to her own soul she is risking, I have determined that she is not to be admitted to Holy Communion,” Archbishop Cordileone said on Twitter on Friday.
Cordileone said Pelosi would have to walk back her support of abortion, go to confession and receive absolution before she could be allowed to take Communion.
Abortion is prohibited by the Catholic Church in most all incidents.
Pelosi has not commented on the archbishop’s announcement, but Politico reported that Pelosi attended Mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown Sunday, where she was given Communion.
