Connecticut man claims DNA planted at crime scene by airplane

MONTVILLE, Conn. — A Connecticut man accused of assault and robbery outside a restaurant in December told detectives his DNA was planted at the crime scene by an airplane in order to frame him.

Gregory Blue, 38, of Norwich, was charged Friday with first-degree robbery with a dangerous instrument, second-degree assault resulting in serious physical injury and second-degree larceny stemming from an investigation into the Dec. 16 incident near the Golden Palace Chinese Restaurant, the Norwich Bulletin reported.

The Connecticut State Police linked Blue’s DNA to a bloodstain found near the crime scene, the Connecticut Post reported. Blue originally said police planted the evidence, but later claimed a phlebotomist dropped his DNA on the site with an airplane, the television station reported.

According to an arrest affidavit, an unidentified 45-year-old man told police he had been approached in the parking lot of the restaurant by a man police said was Blue, at around 10 p.m. Dec. 16 and asked for a light, the Post reported.

The affidavit stated that Blue pulled out what looked to be a silver-and-black handgun and demanded “everything you have, or I am going to kill you,” the Bulletin reported.

After the man handed over $40, Blue allegedly ordered the man to give him his cell phone and keys, police said. When Blue lowered his weapon, the man said a “tussle” ensued and he was struck in the head with the pistol, the Bulletin reported.

When Blue briefly pointed the gun away from the victim, the man lunged and the two of them wrestled, according to the Post.

The victim was able to wrestle the gun away from Blue, who claimed to be a police officer, the Bulletin reported. The victim also claimed Blue stabbed him with a knife, the newspaper reported. The victim then said he took control of the knife and believed he stabbed Blue before the assailant fled the scene.

Blue was identified as a suspect by police based on DNA tests and the victim’s description, the Bulletin reported.

Police interviewed Blue on June 29 at the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Center in Montville -- he was charged in April with trying to steal a bicycle in Norwich and stabbing the owner -- and denied his involvement in the crime and accused police of planting DNA at the site, the newspaper reported.

According to the arrest affidavit, “Blue continued to allege that a phlebotomist who took his blood years ago dropped his DNA at the scene via airplane."

Blue was arraigned in court Friday and bail was set at $250,000, the Post reported.
