Shaquille O’Neal sworn in as reserve deputy in Louisiana parish

BREAUX BRIDGE, La. — Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal is now a reserve deputy in Louisiana.

O’Neal, 48, a sports analyst who played college basketball at LSU before starring for 19 years in the NBA, stopped at the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office on Wednesday, KLFY reported.

The department announced O’Neal as a new team member on Facebook later on Wednesday.

“Thank you for your kindness, support, and encouragement you provided to the deputies. It was very much appreciated,” the department said in its post. “Welcome to the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office Team."

O’Neal, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016, has previously received a commission with the Lafayette Marshal’s Office in Louisiana, KATC reported.

O’Neal has also served as a reserve police officer for Doral, Miami Beach and Golden Beach in Florida; in Tempe, Arizona; and the Port of Los Angeles, according to the Miami Herald.
