Jaguars owner Shad Khan: It was ‘the right thing’ for Jon Gruden to resign as Raiders head coach

NEW YORK — Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan is sharing his thoughts about the resignation of Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden.

Gruden’s resignation comes after emails from 2010 and 2011 showed Gruden using racist and homophobic language. Gruden was an ESPN analyst and commentator for Monday Night Football at the time.

Khan spoke with Ben Fischer, who covers the NFL for the Sports Business Journal, at the CAA World Congress of Sports in New York City on Tuesday. Fischer asked Khan if Gruden losing his job was the “appropriate outcome.” Here’s what Khan had to say:

“I think it was definitely the right thing for the coach to resign and I think it was the right thing for Mark Davis, the Raiders, to accept the resignation. But I do believe this is one of those times where you just don’t say, ‘OK, you know, it’s done, now let’s move on.’ This is one of those instances, even though it was 10 years ago, that it is, you know, it’s very offensive, it’s hurtful, you know, it’s something that needs to be reflected on, and, you know, by all of us. And you know, how do we make the situation better?”

Gruden released the following statement on Monday night:

“I have resigned as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. I love the Raiders and do not want to be a distraction. Thank you to all the players, coaches, staff, and fans of Raider Nation. I’m sorry, I never meant to hurt anyone.”

Last week, Khan dealt with his own head coach being in the news, as video surfaced of a woman dancing close to Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer’s lap. Another video appears to show Meyer touching the woman’s behind. The clips quickly went viral and made headlines across the country. Khan released the following statement on Tuesday, Oct. 5 about the videos:

“I have addressed this matter with Urban. Specifics of our conversation will be held in confidence. What I will say is his conduct last weekend was inexcusable. I appreciate Urban’s remorse, which I believe is sincere. Now, he must regain our trust and respect. That will require a personal commitment from Urban to everyone who supports, represents or plays for our team. I am confident he will deliver.”
