For more than 30 years, Jeffery Warwick spent his career helping Duval County students, working as a P.E. and health teacher while also coaching football and volunteering at his church. His family remembers him as someone who seemed to collect people everywhere he went, which became especially clear when Warwick suffered a cardiac arrest this summer and later died from an anoxic brain injury. At HCA Florida Memorial Hospital, relatives, friends, former players and fraternity brothers filled the hallway for an Honor Walk as he was taken to the operating room for organ donation. One ICU nurse who had participated in many Honor Walks said he’d never seen such a large turnout.
Warwick’s final act reflected the life his family says he’d already been living. He donated his liver and both kidneys, giving three other people an opportunity to continue their lives after his ended. His wife Sharon said her husband had always been a giving person, making organ donation feel like one final extension of who he already was. An Honor Walk is built around a heartbreaking moment, but Warwick’s story also captures why the tradition can be so powerful: a hallway filled with people saying goodbye to one life while knowing that, somewhere else, three families are receiving news filled with hope
