Jacksonville, Fl — Local families teetering on the edge of collapse, may soon get a lifeline. The Jacksonville City Council unanimously passed legislation to provide more than five million dollars for eviction and foreclosure relief.
Two-thirds of the money is expected to go directly to local families, and the rest will be for businesses.
Since Florida’s eviction moratorium expired October 1, there have been 716 eviction cases filed in Duval County, according to Action News Jax.
Jewish Family and Community Services says it has helped at least 2,200 families with financial relief since March.
“I think the need to still great. I think when the moratorium all of them the federal state local everyone we’re going to see a flood of families at risk of losing their homes that’s why I’m happy to see these cares dollars being put out now”, said CEO Colleen Rodriguez.
The funding program hasn’t rolled out yet. It will be available on a first-come, first served basis. The Jacksonville Bar Association will oversee the distribution of CARES Act funding.
