Arrest made in first Jax murder of 2016

An arrest has been made in Jacksonville first murder of 2016.

41-year-old Michael Daniels was shot in the chest outside of his Cadley Circle home just minutes in to New Year's Day. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has arrested his girlfriend's ex-husband, Edward Williams.

We’re told the problem actually started New Year’s Eve. JSO says Daniels’ mother heard someone at the front door of the home while she was home alone. She didn’t see anyone in the peep hole, but then did see a man walking away when she looked out a window. She told Daniels about what she saw, but then nothing happened until a few hours later- after Daniels and his girlfriend had gotten back to the home.

The doorbell rang again. JSO says Daniels went to the door, but didn’t see anyone, so he went outside to investigate. That’s when JSO says Williams shot at Daniels, but missed and fled. Daniels filed a police report.

Shortly after midnight, Daniels stepped out of the home to use his phone.

“When he went outside, the girlfriend said that she heard two gunshots and then the victim came stumbling back in the house and said that ‘he shot me’,” says JSO Lieutenant Steve Gallaher.

A person who knows the suspect told police that Williams had said he wanted to kill the victim because he was interfering with Williams getting back with his ex-wife.

Williams turned himself in Tuesday on charges of murder and possession of firearms by a convicted felon.
