The City of Atlantic Beach is set to hold a workshop Tuesday night to discuss a proposed human rights ordinance.
If passed, the ordinance would make it illegal to discriminate against someone in Atlantic Beach based on their sexual orientation.
City Commission held recent meetings about the issue. It has been up for discussion since November of 2013, but has yet to be voted on.
“It’s sort of disgusting to me that there are American citizens who are not granted the full rights of citizenship,” Harvey said.
Susan Harvey has lived in Atlantic Beach for six years, she told WOKV Tuesday that she supports the ordinance.
Harvey says she attended a meeting about the ordinance in the past and saw many of her neighbors also showing support.
We spoke with Atlantic Beach Commissioner Jimmy Hill who says he has not heard or seen any factual evidence of discrimination since they started debating this issue.
If the ordinance is passed, discrimination based on a person’s sexual orientation within employment, housing and public accommodation would be banned.
The ordinance would make the act illegal, as opposed to a resolution, which is not legally binding.
The City Commission is scheduled to hold the workshop from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Atlantic Beach City Hall located at 800 Seminole Rd.
