The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a deadly deputy-involved shooting.

Deputies were called about a suspicious person in a woman’s backyard in the area of Brainard Drive and 1st Street. Upon responding, deputies encountered a man armed with a handgun.

Two deputies engaged with the suspect and gave commands to drop the gun but he was non-compliant. Both deputies fired and the suspect died, according to SJSO’s Director Skip Cole.

He described the suspect as a 45-year-old man who is well-known to people in the area.

Cole said SJSO had received at least a dozen calls in the last five months regarding the man, who was not publicly identified.

No deputies were hurt in the incident.
