Clark Howard: How to book airfare when traveling

Jacksonville, Fl. — When it comes to buying an airplane ticket, chances are you already know where you want to go. Consumer Warrior Clark Howard says if you want to get away – ditch that mindset and go where the deal is.

"If you love to travel and really don't like to spend a lot of money, going only where the deal is – is front and center to you saving money."

If you don’t know where to start, Clark suggests following travel websites, blogs or newsletters. He also wants you to do your research, look for the areas where airlines are introducing a new service.

When it comes to where you want to go, Clark says if you're traveling domestically – you'll want to book your flight early but not too early.

"I know when an airline introduces a new route, that it's just a matter of when – not if there's going to be an airfare introduction with a new service coming into place."

Clark says it’s a pretty simple concept but acknowledges that it is hard for some people to just buy a ticket strictly based on the sale.

If you are looking to save money when traveling, Clark says do not come become brand loyal to a particular airline. Clark says if you’re stuck on where to start – use google flights.

"Somewhere around to six to eight weeks out, tends to get lower fares than closer or further away. Although, if there's a spot sale and you want to grab it and its more months away—you want to grab it."

One thing Clark says he’s against is booking for international travel too far in advance. Clark says the best fares are going to be six to 15 weeks out from departure.
