Deputy involved in fatal shooting is on paid admin leave

The St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office says a 9-year veteran of the force was behind the bullet that killed a suspect on Katnack Road yesterday.

We’ve learned 29-year-old Thomas Coward is now on paid administrative leave, which is standard procedure as their investigation continues.

The Sheriff’s Office was called to a home on Katnack Road yesterday when a woman inside told them her father was threatening violence against people inside the home. That man, now identified as Rodney Stevens, was wanted on three warrants, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

SJSO says Coward fired one shot to Stevens’ head.

The witness initially reported Stevens was armed, and SJSO says a loaded shotgun was found on a bed near where the suspect was confronted by deputies.
