Jacksonville, FL — It's a meeting that could affect your child's education.
The Duval County School Board is holding a special board meeting on July 19, 2017 at 9:30 am, to discuss controversial House Bill 7069.
Scott Shine, School Board Member for District 2 in Duval County, tells us the meeting will cover the implications of the new law and the possibility of legal intervention regarding the law
"There's been a protest raised by a lot of school boards, including Broward County, they've indicated they're going to file suit against the state. There's some concern by some districts whether or not elements of this bill were unconstitutional," says Shine.
Shine says one of the options on the table is joining that suit from Broward County, once it's officially filed.
However, that's not something he supports.
"My point of view is that the legislature, you know, our elected representatives, the majority of Duval County supported this bill, so I'm not really disposed to support litigation against the state," explains Shine.
Instead, he thinks the focus should be on the next legislative session and the funding for local schools.
Shine says, "We did have shortfalls this year, I think the better plan is to work with the legislature and our local representatives to increase funding for next year."
The meeting will he held in the 6th floor conference room No. 613 at the administration building, at 1701 Prudential Drive. The public is invited to attend.
