Jacksonville, FL — The Duval County Democratic Party says it opposes bringing the Republican National Convention to Jacksonville, calling it reckless and irresponsible.
“Now more than ever we will continue our efforts to mobilize voters in Jacksonville to make sure that Democrats are empowered, energized, and ready to go to the polls”, said party chair Daniel Henry.
Henry and local party leaders cited COVID-19 as the main reason why it is opposed to the convention festivities being held at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena. In a statement, Democrats say the announcement came on the same day that the single-day highest number of COVID-19 cases were reported in Florida.
“The Center for Disease Control has consistently warned people against large gatherings. Yet our local political leadership chose to put partisanship over citizenship and their sworn duty to keep this city safe”, Henry said.
