Escape from Columbia County Jail was not the first for inmate now back in jail

He escaped the Columbia County Jail by moving through the air ducts and over barbed wires, but is now heading back to a cell.

Steven Roberts eluded the US Marshals, Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and other agencies for roughly a day and a half. He was located in the Villas at the Woodlands apartment complex on Crane Avenue in Arlington and taken into custody without incident.

The Columbia County Jail and procedure are now under review.

This is not the first time Roberts has been a fugitive of the law, however. We’ve learned that in 1997 he escaped the St. Johns County Jail through existing structural issues.
