Eye Exams to be Offered at some Duval County Schools this week

Comprehensive eye exams will be available this week at participating schools, mobile centers, and optometrist offices.

Vision screenings are typically done as part of a child's physical exam, so parents should ask pediatricians about checking their children's eyesight before school starts."Having poor vision can sometimes go unnoticed," Armstrong told CBS News.Kids may not say anything about their vision or know that it is a problem. Parents and teachers, be on the look out for squinting eyes. If your child has to squint or strain to see the front of the classroom, it could show up as headaches during the day, poor school performance or even behavioral problems. At your childs next check-up, be sure to ask Pediatricians how to get your kids vison back to 20/20

An organization out of Miami is offering free eye exams for students at a number of schools in Duval County this week.

The Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program is providing comprehensive eye examinations to students at Westview PreK-8 school, Woodland Acres Elementary, and Arlington Elementary School on November 13th and 14th.

Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program is a subsidiary of Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired, which is a non-profit organization.

The Heiken vision program is funded by grants.

The services will be offered at Westview PreK-8 on Monday, and then at Woodland Acres Elementary and Arlington Elementary on Tuesday.

Services will also be available at five mobile eye clinics and across 1,100 participating optometrist offices in the state.

It’s goal is to help financially disadvantaged students to achieve academic success with free vision screenings and glasses.

The program does require parents to apply and qualify for the free program.

If your child doesn’t qualify for the free program, your child’s insurance benefits can now be used to pay for the exam and glasses on a mobile visit.

That includes insurance programs like Medicaid.

You can apply for and learn more about the program here.
