FHP arrests a man in the fatal crash that killed a UNF student

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol has arrested 61-year-old Michael Lee Motley in connection to the fatal crash last July, which killed 22-year-old UNF student Megan Nicole Mooney.

The fatal incident occurred in July of 2021, at the intersection of US-Hwy 1 and State Road 9B’s exit ramp when Motley’s vehicle struck the left side of Mooney’s car as she was in the left turn turning lane on SR-9B’s exit ramps.

A third vehicle was also struck, with two people inside who did not suffer life-threatening injuries, according to the arrest report.

Currently, Motley is in jail awaiting his first court date.

FHP’s report says Motley’s blood alcohol content was recorded at 0.174 at the time of the crash.

Motley is facing three charges: misdemeanor driving under the influence with damage; felony DUI manslaughter; felony vehicular homicide.

A total bond of $265,009 is listed for Motley, however, he cannot be released on bond, since he has unsentenced felony charges and he has yet to make his first appearance in court, according to his Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office inmate information.
