Florida cities, counties brace for impact after passage of Amendment 3

The city of Jacksonville is projected to lose around $180 million starting next budget cycle.

Jacksonville, Fl — Tax relief is coming to Florida homeowners. Amendment 3 passed with at least 62 percent support.

The homestead exemption for non-school property taxes will increase from $50,000 to $150,000 in 2027 and then to $250,000 in 2028.

For months we’ve heard city and county government leaders question the financial implications - including Jacksonville - which is projected to lose around $180 million starting next budget cycle.

Mayor Donna Deegan told Jacksonville’s Morning News on Monday that her office has already started preparing for likely cuts.

“We immediately start to look for places that we can cut. If it should pass that would be the first thing we would have to do. It would be a full third of our discretionary budget which is basically all of our services,” Deegan said.

A legislative analysis estimated the measure would reduce local government revenue by nearly $5 billion in the 2027-28 fiscal year, with the impact growing in subsequent years.
