Florida Department of Health in Duval County warns about algae blooms, ahead of summer heat

Jacksonville, FL — As the start to summer is just days away, the Florida Department of Health in Duval County wants to remind residents about the potential bacteria lurking in warm water.

They say under the right conditions, heat can lead to algae blooms in bodies of water,. with winds and waves pushing them near the shore at times when people are looking to cool off and swim.

If you're exposed to this algae,the department says you can experience everything from ear, eye, and skin reactions-- like rashes-- to flu-like symptoms and hay fever, though they add these reactions are not common.

Swim It with a buddy when safety flags and signs indicate that it is safe to do so.

The department has released the following reminders:

• Shore It on the sand if you have a cut on your skin, have a weakened immune system or you are alone

• Dodge It avoid organisms that live in or near the water, and stay clear of algae blooms.

If you experience an illness you believe is related to an algae bloom, they want you to call the Florida Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
