Florida Gov. DeSantis appoints interim Clay County sheriff

There’s an interim sheriff in Clay County a day after Darryl Daniels was suspended following his arrest Thursday.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis made the announcement Saturday. Effective immediately, Matt Walsh will serve as the interim sheriff of the Clay County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the appointment, Walsh had been serving as an assistant special agent in charge at the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Daniels is facing three counts of giving false reports to law enforcement officers and one count of tampering with evidence, according to arrest records. He released a video Thursday, blaming dirty politics for the timing of his arrest.

In the letter appointing Walsh, DeSantis says the appointment of qualified and ethical individuals is one of his greatest priorities and responsibilities.

“Your appointment is evidence of my confidence in your ability to serve with excellence and distinction,” DeSantis says in the letter.
