28 guns stolen during 2 Middleburg home break-ins

Deputies are hunting for whoever stole over $6,000 worth of stuff from 2 homes in Middleburg last week, including 28 firearms.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office says various kinds of pistols, revolvers, rifles and shotguns were taken from those homes on Ten Rod Road during separate break-ins Thursday that were just hours apart.

One of the incident reports shows a pistol, two shotguns and two rifles were snatched from a room in one of the homes.

The other break-in report has five pistols, seven shotguns and 11 rifles taken from gun safes, but it's not clear if they were or weren't locked.

Also taken during the break-ins were 2 iPad's, a camera, $325 in coins and 10 Xbox games.

A resident at one of the homes - who happens to be a principal of a Clay County elementary school - reported what happened to CCSO after coming home from work.

CCSO fears these guns could end up being sold on the street and used in future crimes, so they've given the make, model and serial numbers of the stolen guns to other law enforcement agencies in case one of them is found in a different jurisdiction.

Deputies will also be checking pawn shops to see if the stolen guns were sold that way.

An Action News Jax investigation last year showed that 400 guns were stolen from vehicles in Duval County last year. Around 20% of those ended up at other crime scenes.
