Half-cent sales tax for Duval Schools will be decided by voters in November

Jacksonville, FL — You will ultimately decide whether to raise the sales tax in Duval County by a half penny to pay for school building improvements and technology upgrades. The Jacksonville City Council ended months of debate by voting 18-to-1 to put the issue on the ballot this November.

But several council members were concerned about oversight and more.

“If we’re talking about building schools for the next generation, do we need the traditional brick and mortar that we have today?”, said Council Member Michael Boylan.

Council Member Rory Diamond was the lone no vote on Tuesday night.

Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry tweeted after the council’s vote, saying “I look forward to signing this legislation immediately and supporting it on the ballot this fall.”

The $1.9 billion measure, if approved, would infrastructure repairs, new construction, technology upgrades and more.
