Jacksonville Zoo Stanley crane Olivia is dead after ‘age-related’ illnesses strike at 43

The cherished bird was surrounded by the vet and animal care team when she died after 30 years at the zoo.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens announced on its Facebook page this week that a Stanley crane has died after 30 years at the zoo.

Olivia was 43.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Olivia, our beloved Stanley crane,” the post read.

The post said the bird was the oldest known Stanley crane in North America and “a cherished member of our Jacksonville Zoo and Botanical Gardens family.”

Olivia had been experiencing age-related health challenges, including arthritis and declining kidney function, zoo officials said.

Zoo veterinary and animal care teams had to make the difficult decision to humanely euthanize her as she was surrounded by loving, caring team members, the post said.

Olivia arrived at the zoo in 1996.

“From vocalizing at golf carts that dared to drive too fast past her yard to running, jumping and keeping our team on their toes, Olivia had a way of making every day a little more interesting,” the post read.

“She will be deeply missed by the team members who knew her, cared for her and loved her over the years.”
