Officers responding to the Westgate Apartments on La Ventura Drive about 1 a.m. found a 15-year-old with a gunshot wound to his head, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Police say the teenager had life-threatening injuries, and rescue personnel with the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department were able to save his life before transporting him to a hospital.
Investigators say preliminary information shows the teen was handling a gun when it went off, hitting him in the head. Another juvenile was in the room at the time and witnessed the shooting.
Police say it appears the shooting was an accident, but the investigation is ongoing.
