Suspect in custody, following SWAT situation in Mandarin neighborhood

Jacksonville, FL — An hours-long SWAT situation in a gated Mandarin community has wrapped up, peacefully.

The Jacksonville Sherri's Office tells us a suspect in their custody, after they were called to a home in the Reds Gait subdivision, right next to Loretto Elementary School, for a domestic related situation.

The SWAT team then surrounded the home and worked to communicate with that man. It’s not entirely clear yet exactly how police took him into custody.

According to JSO, they were called to the home sometime before noon on Friday. When officers arrived a woman came running out of the home, who they described as disheveled and very upset.

"She tells us there's a male in the house that has a firearm. They've been in some sort of alteration, not sure if was just verbal or physical, but we're assuming physical at this time, but there is a male in the house and he does have a firearm. He has threatened to kill himself, as well as her, according to the victim," said PIO Officer Chris Hancock.

He’s since been identified by police as Thomas Lewis, 37. He’s facing at least 3 different charges, including battery on a pregnant woman.
